Theme for 2011 - Tallis to Whitacre
"I am delighted to introduce the theme for 2011, Tallis to Whitacre. I wanted to convey a sense of appreciation for the history of choral music across the centuries. What better composer to start with than Thomas Tallis? Tallis is the quintessential Tudor musician with music ranging from the beautifully understated 'If ye love me' - featuring in our Renaissance Masters workshop - to the colossal 40-part motet 'Spem in Alium' (one day!).
With many pit stops along the way - including Handel, Mozart and Britten - we will end the 2011 series with modern music for Advent, including that of American composer Eric Whitacre. Whitacre is one of the most popular composers of our generation and his music seems to draw inspiration from the early polyphony studied in the first workshop.
